12 beautiful beaches to wear your birthday suit in Sardinia, Italy

You searched for it; time and time again: nude, naked Sardinia, nudismo and nude Italy. I’ve done a little digging and found 12 wonderful beaches in Sardinia, Italy where you can proudly wear your birthday suit. Spiagge per e nudismo in Sardegna, Italia.

But before you strip down, be sure you know the laws of the land:

In 2006 the Italian Supreme Court passed a law stating that certain beaches could be designated as a nude beach. These beaches would in fact have to post signs for the weary traveler – stating the beach as a nudist beach.

Summer 2012 in Taormina, Sicily a man was fined €1200 for going nude on a public, overcrowded beach. There were other nudist on the same beach as this man but they ran away to hide the moment the police arrived. He was the only one who had the balls to sit on his patch of sand and make the police come to him!

Tortoli, Sardinia – 2 British tourists were subject to a stern warning from police for being naked on the beach.

***Disclaimer: I have never been to any of the above beaches. Please use caution and common sense before you shed your clothes.

Nothing annoys me more than seeing a beautiful beach, street or park littered with the laziness of people who continue to make our world a not so beautiful place to live. My favourite time to hit the beach in Sardinia is May and September – why you ask? Well, because there are hardly any tourists and the beaches are clean. What you say? Clean? Yes, clean and litter free.

Who do you think is going to walk down that long sandy path to clean this disgusting mess up? The commune? The men and women who work long, hard hours collecting garbage from house to house, from shop to shop and from hotel to hotel? You really think they are paid adequately to walk down that steep incline to retrieve the garbage you left? NO! No, they aren’t and no they won’t.

Now, I can’t put all this litter blame on the tourists, can I? That would be totally ignorant on my part. This is a local problem as much as it’s an international problem. I’ve given harsh words to my local friends about leaving their cigarette butts in the sand, and I’ve been tempted one too many times to give the same harsh words to the tourists I see leaving litter on the beach (but lucky for you, my husband held me back).

If you brought it with you – take it away with you, this includes your cigarette butts! There are adequate garbage bins at ALL public beaches in Sardinia.

Don’t be an uneducated fool who leaves litter on this island, or anywhere in this beautiful place we call planet earth.

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Golden Hour

This week the folks controlling the Weekly Photo Challenge have asked us to represent “The Golden Hour.” The golden hour is the first and last hour of the day. I’ve never been a sunset photographer and sunrises are just too early for me. I did however manage to capture a photo of the setting full moon one early morning.

This photo was shot at 5:03 am using a Sony Cyber-Shot. I think it turned out pretty cool, you can even see the moon’s reflection, shining brightly on Castlesardo. There is nothing golden about this photo but it was shot at the right time for this weeks theme.

Travel Theme: Sculpture

It was early morning and the sky was that typical Mediterranean blue when we decided to hit the beach. Normally, we are afternoon beach goers with a full tummy and want nothing more than to sink into the warm afternoon sand and snooze off a traditional Sardinian lunch, but not today. Today we packed our bags earlier than the birds.

Surprised to find my favourite beach littered with makeshift bamboo sculptures/shade-shelters I knew this was my moment to capture the weekly travel theme. I was even more surprised to find the beach completely … empty.

In the summer months, particularly in the afternoon, this beach is packed with tourists and locals alike. It was a great welcome to have this stretch of beach to ourselves, if only for an hour.

I got a little lucky with this week’s travel theme. This week I didn’t have to go out searching for objects to photograph. These sculptures just came to me.

From the Sardinian recipe box: Gigantic Zucchini … Bread

A friend who lives 3km down the curvy mountain road cultivates her own vegetables: eggplant, tomatoes, every herb known to man and gigantic zucchini. Each and every year her surplus is big and beautiful and this year I’m able to taste the fruits of her labor.

For the first time in recorded history … I’ve made Zucchini Bread. Many moons ago, my sister went on a zucchini bread making binge which lasted months, she gave zucchini bread away as gifts for birthdays, Christmas and weddings! At the time she was new to gardening and wasn’t aware of the growth potential in zucchini, hence, her gigantic garden of zucchini and the hundreds of loaves that followed. Think of it as a potato lasagna but without the tomato sauce and you’ve got yourself an easy winner for lunch or dinner any day of the week.
