Island of Flames as Sardinia Burns North to South

Hundreds of hectares are destroyed as a second day of fierce winds and flames sweep across Sardinia. Two thousand hectares of grassland, woodland, scrub and precious farmland have fallen victim to this senseless act of foolishness. Yesterdays temperature reached a scorching 47 degrees and today will be no different with high winds expected to push the flames across the second largest island in the Mediterranean.

Word on the street is that these fires were deliberately set by a few very stupid people.

The closest fires to me are in Sassari which is an hours drive away. I have not seen flames but this morning I woke to this:

At around six this morning I awoke to the smell of smoke, I looked out the window and saw this scary sight. Today, unfortunately will be another day of fear and chaos as Sardinia prepares itself for another day of inferno.

Some towns have been evacuated and an alarm(RED) as been issued for the entire island. Today will be another day with temperatures in the 40’s and high winds are expected.

As I write these words tears fill my eyes and goosebumps race across my skin.

Sardinia – A stunning paradise of litter

Nothing annoys me more than seeing a beautiful beach, street or park littered with the laziness of people who continue to make our world a not so beautiful place to live. My favourite time to hit the beach in Sardinia is May and September – why you ask? Well, because there are hardly any tourists and the beaches are clean. What you say? Clean? Yes, clean and litter free.

Who do you think is going to walk down that long sandy path to clean this disgusting mess up? The commune? The men and women who work long, hard hours collecting garbage from house to house, from shop to shop and from hotel to hotel? You really think they are paid adequately to walk down that steep incline to retrieve the garbage you left? NO! No, they aren’t and no they won’t.

Now, I can’t put all this litter blame on the tourists, can I? That would be totally ignorant on my part. This is a local problem as much as it’s an international problem. I’ve given harsh words to my local friends about leaving their cigarette butts in the sand, and I’ve been tempted one too many times to give the same harsh words to the tourists I see leaving litter on the beach (but lucky for you, my husband held me back).

If you brought it with you – take it away with you, this includes your cigarette butts! There are adequate garbage bins at ALL public beaches in Sardinia.

Don’t be an uneducated fool who leaves litter on this island, or anywhere in this beautiful place we call planet earth.

Considered yourself warned. I’ll be watching you.

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Golden Hour

This week the folks controlling the Weekly Photo Challenge have asked us to represent “The Golden Hour.” The golden hour is the first and last hour of the day. I’ve never been a sunset photographer and sunrises are just too early for me. I did however manage to capture a photo of the setting full moon one early morning.

The Golden Hour – Asinara Bay, Sardinia, Italy

This photo was shot at 5:03 am using a Sony Cyber-Shot. I think it turned out pretty cool, you can even see the moon’s reflection, shining brightly on Castlesardo. There is nothing golden about this photo but it was shot at the right time for this weeks theme.

The Flow of YS Falls – Jamaica

This 7 tiered flow of water is nestled within a secluded valley in Jamaica’s ‘breadbasket’ parish – St. Elizabeth.

YS Falls is a spectacular sight to behold. Throngs of tourists and locals alike flock to this working cattle and horse ranch each year. There are natural pools for a relaxing swim or for the more adventurous there is zip lining over the falls. We spent a good few hours here, hiking and taking in the gorgeous views.
