Casu Marzu is eerie, very, very eerie. It’s a pungent cheese made from sheep milk and is left outside, uncovered, to rot. Tiny cheese flies infest the cheesy block and lay their off-spring, billions of small transparent maggots. The larvae feed on the cheese, thus causing fermentation and allowing the casu marzu to fully decompose into an eerie, stinky, creamy and highly sought after delicacy from the mountains of Sardinia. The moment I saw the sign above the door I knew what I had to do. Continue reading

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns
D.H. Lawrence said it perfectly in his 1921 travel memoir Sea and Sardinia:
“Sardinia is another thing. Much wider, much more ordinary, not up-and-down at all, but running away into the distance. Unremarkable ridges of moor-like hills running away, perhaps to a bunch of dramatic peaks on the southwest. This gives a sense of space … lovely space about one, and traveling distances-nothing finished, nothing final. It is like liberty itself … ” D.H. Lawrence. Sea and Sardinia. 1921.
To me, Sardinia is an island filled with striking coastlines and impressive interiors. She’s also my home.

Weekly Photo Challenge: An Unusual POV from Sardinia
This week we are challenged with an unusual POV, and yesterday I found myself time to play around with just that – POV. I was sitting on my sofa watching laundry dry when I decided to snap a photo through my window.

It certainly creates an interesting point of view from stunning Sardinia.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Sea and Sardinia
“Even castles made of sand, fall into the sea, eventually.” Jimi Hendrix

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” Jacques Cousteau

“The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach – waiting for a gift from the sea.” Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I’ve always surrounded myself with the sea from Australia to Grand Cayman and now resting in Sardinia.
At what sea do you rest your wary bones?

Weekly Photo Challenge: One Shot, Two Ways
This week’s photo challenge was well, a challenge. I never, repeat, never take portrait shots. I don’t like how they turn out in but I finally managed to shoot these shots at my favourite beach. Here are the rules for this week’s photo challenge:
For this challenge, capture two images — a horizontal and a vertical version — of the same scene or subject. There are no concrete “rules” here, but a) it should be evident that both shots are of the same place/location or person/thing, and b) your photographs should ideally have been taken during the same shoot — where’s the challenge if you’re just plucking out pictures of a particular location or person from your archives?

And now the not so beautiful portrait shot:

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow
A Caribbean storm over Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman. This is one of my favourite photos I took while living in Grand Cayman this past winter. I had a fabulous time watching this storm move in and even got a little wet.
