VIDEO – The Kiss | I Candelieri 2012

Sassari – The kiss between two guilds. The Carpenters (Gremio dei Falegnami) and The Peasants (Gremio dei Contadini.)

Have you seen Sardinia’s 2nd largest festival?

The Descent of the Candle Bearers | I Candelieri 2012

Sassari – August 14th, 2012 – The 2nd largest festival in Sardinia owes its name to the large ‘candlesticks’ which men parade though-out town for a six-hour parade of strength, endurance, song and dance.

I Candelieri was born around 1500, a vow to the Virgin Mary; and to give thanks to the survival of three plagues during the 1600’s, which killed thousands of people on the island of Sardinia.

I Candelieri – The Descent of the Candle Bearers is a festival which embodies the spirit and traditions of Sassari. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when Sassari, under Pisan domination, adopted a modified version of the Pisan tradition of an offering, similar to a large wooden wax-covered altarpiece to the Madonna on the eve of the Assumption.

10 candlesticks with 8 men per candle parade throughout the town to the beat of drums, clapping and chanting in local dialect. The last stop, at midnight, is St. Rosario’s Church where every Candelieri receives a midnight blessing from the church.

Notes from 1997 | Toronto to Sydney

“Mom, I’m moving to Australia for a year.”

“But … where will you go? What will you do? Where will you live? How will you make money?” my mother asked in her usual motherly way.

Thirty-two long air flying hours later I was sitting at the bus station outside Sydney International Airport without a clue where I…

My Expat Lives | 4 Years in Sardinia, Italy

On May 6th 2008, I left my home and native land for Sardinia, Italy.

How is it possible that four years have passed? I can’t believe it! I made the long trip back to Canada several times in the last few years. The time never enough, and some of my family have come to visit us in Sardinia and again, the time was never enough, but the memories will stay forever.

This will be one of my longer posts, so grab a glass of wine, some popcorn or a jar of Nutella. Just get comfortable.

Find out the ups and downs of expat life in Sardinia, Italy.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unfocused

I’ve dug around my photo vault this morning and have found a few more unfocused shots for this weeks theme. I had to dig back a few years to find these shots as I usually delete them. Now with this challenge I’m seeing these unfocused shots in a new light.

An interview with La Nuova Sardegna by Silvana Porcu

This past March I was contacted by Silvana Porcu, an English-speaking Sardinian journalist from La Nuova Sardegna. She and her editors were looking for an article on Sardinia but from an outsiders point of view. Silvana found My Sardinian Life and she contacted me. We did the interview via Skype, she in Alghero and I in my adopted hometown in Sardinia.

I would like to thank Silvana for taking the time out to interview me on My Sardinian Life. And another huge thanks to La Nuova Sardegna for printing the article. This was a huge honour for me, thank you.

What joy and exposure! I’ve already been contacted by a woman who lives in Sardinia and she is Canadian! Imagine! I thought I was the only Canadian on the island. I’m looking forward to meeting these newfound friends.

One of my favourite hang-outs when I go back to Canada is the Fallsview Casino. They have great clubs,  a little gambling and awesome golden bathrooms.

A rather difficult challenge this week. Hope this captures this weeks theme.
